Pete Gillespie and Ruffell Pete Garage Project: The Art of Beer
Pre-order: Estimated dispatch
Garage Project- The Art of Beer is a one-of-a-kind book celebrating the art, the creativity and - of course - the craft of the world's most experimental brewery, New Zealand's own Garage Project. Since its earliest days in Wellington's Aro Valley, Garage Project has collaborated with some of Aotearoa's most talented graphic designers, painters, game designers, tattoo artists (and more) to create literally hundreds of unique artworks for its cans and bottles. Many have become iconic, much-loved and even collectible items in their own right. Today, Garage Project's colourful and ever-changing beer labels are as well-known as its unique and popular brews - and over 100 of them are collected in this book. Here are original sketches and finished art for the beers you love to love, from Pils'n'Thrills to Aro Noir to BEER beer, with insights into the creative process and talented people who made them - and the stories and inspiration behind the brewery and the beers, all as told in entertaining style by the co-founders themselves. Drink in the thinking, the process and the inspiration behind Garage Project with this beautifully designed gift book.
"Ye Gods! Is this all about BEER? Beer from a garage up the Aro Valley?! I'm from Auckland, I know not of these things. I also gave up on NZ beer back in the late '80s when the Tui brewery in Mangatainoka stopped making their deelish Tennant's Green Label stubby. Be that as it may, I'm totally buzzed by this amazing book. What a fun project! With today's art schools proving to be largely surplus to requirements this is marvellously subversive stuff. I'm not going to single out individuals...like Pablo Espinosa, Gus Hunter, Stuart Thomas and T-Wei. It wouldn't be fair because ALL the artwork in these pages is indeed 'staggeringly good'. This book could get me drinking beer again! Great stuff lads. Good on you!" Dick Frizzell, Artist
"Garage Project has always delighted my senses. My tastebuds, obviously, but almost equal is the delight of looking at the labels - frequently works of art in themselves. This book gave me a new appreciation for those whose art wraps some of my favourite beers." Hilary Barry, Beer Enthusiast and TV presenter
"From a little garage in the back waters of Te Aro - not only an explosion of beer flavours to descend on the taste buds of New Zealand, but an equal proliferation of extraordinary pop art for the discerning drinker and art connoisseur alike!" Richard Taylor, Weta Workshop
"Great book. Great beer. Great art by great people. Best enjoyed whilst sipping some amazing Garage Project beers." James Watt, Captain, BrewDog PLC
In 2011 Pete Gillespie and Jos Ruffell left their day jobs and, with help from Pete's brother Ian, transformed an old car garage in Aro Valley, Wellington, to begin brewing just 50 litres at a time. Flash forward eight years and this canny enterprise is now New Zealand's fastest-growing, most loved and widely celebrated brewery, Garage Project, their beers stocked all over the country and sought throughout the world. In 2015, Garage Project topped the Deloitte's Fast 50 and more recently they topped the Hottest 100 Kiwi Craft Beers poll at the Great Australian Beer Spectapular festival. Garage Project's aim is to create unique and beautiful beers. They're well known for pushing boundaries, reinterpreting styles and challenging the notions of what beer can be. 'Good things start in garages,' says head brewer and author Pete. 'But whether we're brewing 50 litres or 2000, we're still here to take some risks, to have a bit of fun and to try something new.'
